THE PROJECT

OVERVIEW

Wills Park Equestrian Center has been the heart of the north Atlanta horse community since its inception in the early ‘70s. Located on 50 acres of rolling fields and woods, the center currently includes a covered arena, two outdoor competition rings, more than 290 shed row stalls, two schooling rings and a show office.

Each year, the center hosts multiple local and USEF rated horse shows, as well as dog shows, reining shows, an annual rodeo and other community activities.

Wills Park Equestrian Center is one of the few equestrian facilities remaining that is located in the thriving suburb of a major metropolitan city. It has become a well-loved hub for equestrians from across the Southeast. Yet as the center has grown in usage over the past five decades, the horse show industry has grown and evolved.

By upgrading the center’s infrastructure, we can ensure that this unique facility can continue to serve the equestrian community and the citizens of north Atlanta for years to come.

THE PROJECT

CONSTRUCTION PLAN

The Foundation’s multi-year construction plan includes:

• Install new lighting and fencing in covered arena. (Completed.)

• Destruction of the maintenance barn. (Completed.)

• Build NEW outdoor 150’ x 340’ competition ring, with attached schooling ring. (Targeted for Spring 2022.)

• Install new drainage and new footing in Hunter Ring One.

• Relocate and expand parking facilities.

• Expand existing “pony ring”, with attached schooling ring. Install new fencing.

• Build a two-story multi-purpose building, housing the show office and event space, with viewing decks.

• Install new drainage and new footing in ALL competition rings and in the covered arena.

• Add shade pavilions and terraced seating for spectators.

• Construct new barns, expanding the stall count.

• Relocate trailer and RV parking.

The City of Alpharetta and the Foundation began construction on the new competition ring, a full funded $1.3 million project.

The voters of Alpharetta passed a bond proposal funding various parks improvements, including $5 million dedicated to Wills Park Equestrian Center.

The Foundation raised more than $500,000 from individual donors.

2021

Memorandum of Understanding signed, that details the partnership between the Foundation and the City of Alpharetta.

Foundation raised initial $250,000 to match the city’s contribution.

2020

City of Alpharetta agreed to match the Foundation’s future fundraising, dollar for dollar.

Maintenance shed was demolished, clearing the way for new construction.

City of Alpharetta approved site plan.

2019

The Foundation upgraded all lighting and reconstructed the walls in the covered arena.

Wills Park is surveyed and stormwater study started.

City of Alpharetta repainted the covered arena, the concession area and the restrooms.

City of Alpharetta laser graded all of the rings.

Wills Park Equestrian Foundation gains 501(c)3 status.

City of Alpharetta committed $250,000 as matching funds to the Foundation to begin the revitalization of Wills Park.

Development of multiple options for equestrian center’s site plan.

Establishment of the Equestrian Advisory Committee to work with city leaders in regards to Wills Park Equestrian Center.

Wills Park Equestrian Foundation established.

First of a series of meetings involving citizen input to create the Wills Park Master Plan.

I have attended horse shows at Wills Park Equestrian Center since it was created by Fulton County in the early 1970’s. It started out with one ring and a large rolling field used as an “outside course” where the covered arena now sits. Barns A, B, and C were eventually built. The facility was used by many local organizations to do a one-day horse show on the weekends. During the eighties, the addition of the middle rings and more stabling allowed for larger, nationally rated horse shows. I am excited to see that major improvements are now in the works to improve some of the aging parts of Wills Park, upgrades that will encourage us all to continue to support this facility.

The Southeastern Charity Horse Show was held at Wills Park Equestrian Center from 1983 to 1994. Numerous world champions would show there every year, and everyone enjoyed wonderful hospitality under the blue and white striped tent on the hill overlooking the covered arena. During several years the proceeds benefited the Shepherd Center of Atlanta. The large attendance (both locally and out of state) alerted local officials to the real possibility of rural Alpharetta and Wills Park becoming an equestrian destination!

Wills Park has always been such a wonderful part of my children’s early riding life. My son Chase has done the lead line through Grand Prix there. The five-year master plan to upgrade the equestrian center will cost approximately $10 million. The recent passage of the Alpharetta Park Bond, which allots $5 million for the equestrian center, will be the City’s match for the Foundation. For every dollar the Foundation raises, the City will automatically match that amount to fund new construction.

The Foundation has a five-year fundraising goal of $5 million – our part of the overall funding to complete the revitalization of the equestrian center.

Cheryl Sims’ involvement with Wills Park spans decades. Her daughter Alison grew up riding at the park and is now a professional rider and trainer. Cheryl founded Cheryl & Co in 2003 and, with her son Jay, manages local horse shows at Wills Park and surrounding venues. Her family’s experience in the industry drove Cheryl’s vision for a reinvigorated, renovated Wills Park Equestrian Center that would positively impact both the horse community and the City of Alpharetta.

CHERYL SIMS

Michael Gelb is the owner of Hunters Glen Equestrian Center, Wilsun Custom Horse Products and Sterling Creek Enterprises. He was introduced to horses in the 1990s at Huntcliff Equestrian Center. He and his wife Erika are both active riders, with horses in Alpharetta, Holland and Germany. Michael is committed to sharing the equestrian knowledge he has gained from around the world and to bringing the Alpharetta horse community closer together.

MICHAEL GELB

Scott and Marie Tittle are passionate about the revitalization of Wills Park. Scott is President of Blueprint Wealth Management, a fee-only, fiduciary, financial planning and investment advisory firm based in Milton. Marie is Vice President of Blueprint and is also a renowned professional speaker to church audiences. They are both active members of Northpoint Community Church in Alpharetta. Their daughters, Suzette and Liza, are equestriennes.

SCOTT AND MARIE TITTLE

Jeff Felton’s interest in the efforts of Wills Park Equestrian Foundation was cultivated while watching the transformative power of the sport through his daughter, Wyette. Jeff has had a long and successful career at the nexus of healthcare products, services and technology. He is currently the CEO of Vereco. He was the CEO of Atlanta based Logisticare, and led large enterprises like RelayHealth and Connected Care and Analytics (both divisions of McKesson). He lives with his wife Robin and their four children in Canton, GA.

JEFF FELTON

Kevin Nolan is the founder & CEO of Nolan Transportation Group, a transportation company providing third-party logistical services for over 7,000 customers in the US, Canada and Mexico. He also founded OTR Capital, MIG Insurance and online payment processor Payhawk, all headquartered in North Atlanta. His wife, Lindsay, grew up riding and started showing at Wills Park in the mid 80’s. She has worked in both the real estate and preschool industries, and has been a stay-at-home mom, supporting two daughters who are avid equestriennes and her youngest daughter, who plays tennis.

KEVIN AND LINDSAY NOLAN

Libba Fisher was bitten by the equestrian bug in the early 90s and has been riding and showing ever since. While she currently competes across the Southeast, she is one of the many members of the equestrian community that got their start at Wills Park. Libba has many fond memories of riding and showing at Wills Park and enjoyed watching her children grow up competing there as well. Libba sees Wills Park as a hub for the metro Atlanta equestrian community, one that fosters riders of all levels and abilities, and is excited to be a part of its revitalization.

LIBBA FISHER

Megan is a professional in the horse industry who sees Wills Park as an important piece of her business and business alike. She lives in Alpharetta and owns a horse farm in Milton. She serves as Vice President of Georgia Hunter Jumper Association where she works with the community of equestrians who call Wills Park home.

MEGAN O’DWYER THIEL

Jane Pittman is an avid equestrian and frequent participant at Wills Park Equestrian Center horse shows since 2004. Jane and her husband Sam purchased their Milton property based on its proximity to Wills Park!
Jane was a global investment banker for over 25 years working from New York City. She is thrilled to have recently “semi-retired” to Alpharetta horse country and looks forward to bringing her equestrian passion and vast business skills to assist with the exciting revitalization of Wills Park.

JANE PITTMAN

Daniel Matalon’s passion for the equestrian community and Wills Park began when his daughter, Taylor, competed in her first show at Wills Park in 2015. As the owner of A 2ndChance Bail Bonds and A 2nd Chance Monitoring, Daniel is a firm believer in community involvement and giving back. Bringing his passion for helping others and business acumen to the revitalization project to the park so that other families will have the opportunity to be a part of the equestrian community.

DANIEL MATALON

Jacqueline quickly fell in love with horses after moving to an Alpharetta farm. Within a year she competed at Wills Park in her first show. She competed over the next 10 years, many shows at Wills Park, where countless memories were made. Following college horses weren't in the budget, but 13 years later she returned to the sport that shaped her. Today, she serves as General Manager at Horseshoe Bend Country Club. Jacqueline is passionate about this project because she knows the value Wills Park brings to the community and the impact this facility has on lives.

JACQUELINE WELCH

Catherine has loved horses since she first sat on one at 4 years old, continuing to ride throughout junior high and high school. After showing in western pleasure for several years, she turned to hunter and has competed with her daughter at Wills Park with Centurion Farm since 2010. She is very excited about the renovation for Wills Park and is thrilled to be able to play a part in making this vision a reality. Catherine had a career in banking before becoming a mom to three wonderful children. She is a board member of MidSouth Bank Corporation, and is Vice President and a board member of The Malone Family Foundation. In addition, she owns and operates Sweet Magnolia Bakery, a cottage bakery business. Catherine and her husband Scott reside in Woodstock.
